Roketsan: TAYFUN Blok-4 Nears Service, GEZGİN Ready for Serial Output

Roketsan General Manager Murat İkinci gave the clearest public timeline yet for two of the company’s most closely watched strategic-strike programmes on September 12, telling state broadcaster TRT Haber at a TEKNOFEST technology event in Aksaray that the TAYFUN Blok-4 hypersonic ballistic missile is close to entering Turkish Armed Forces service, and that serial-production preparations for the long-range GEZGİN cruise missile are complete pending final test and qualification work.

TAYFUN Blok-4: Türkiye’s Heaviest Ballistic Missile

TAYFUN Blok-4 is the largest and, at hypersonic speed, the fastest member of Roketsan’s TAYFUN ballistic missile family, which already has earlier blocks in Turkish service. Roketsan unveiled the Blok-4 publicly for the first time at IDEF 2025 in Istanbul, showing a missile weighing more than 7 tonnes and roughly 10 metres long, carrying what the company describes as a high-explosive, blast-fragmentation warhead designed to strike “air defence systems, command and control centres, military hangars, and other critical military infrastructure from long distances with high precision.” Roketsan has not published an official range figure; open-source estimates cited in Turkish trade reporting put it above 1,000 km, but that has not been confirmed by the company.

İkinci’s comment that the missile will “very soon” join the inventory does not commit to a firm date, and Roketsan has previously discussed a 2026 inventory target for the system without confirming it has been met. TAYFUN Blok-4 would sit alongside earlier TAYFUN variants already fielded by Turkish forces, extending the family’s reach into the hypersonic-glide performance bracket that a handful of countries — the United States, Russia, China and North Korea among them — have already fielded in some form.

GEZGİN: A Long-Range Cruise Missile Nearing Production

GEZGİN is Roketsan’s long-range, land-attack cruise missile, developed jointly with TÜBİTAK SAGE, the state defence-research institute behind several of Türkiye’s other missile programmes. It sits above the shorter-ranged, already-fielded ÇAKIR ground-launched cruise missile in Roketsan’s cruise-missile family. Roketsan and Turkish officials have avoided publishing a range figure for GEZGİN; İkinci repeated that reticence in his TRT Haber remarks, saying only that Türkiye would field both ballistic and cruise missiles capable of engaging “from sufficiently long range” — language that Turkish defence commentators have read as pointing toward a weapon in the same performance class as the US Tomahawk or South Korea’s Hyunmoo-3 cruise missiles, though Roketsan has not endorsed that comparison directly.

According to İkinci, serial-production preparations at Roketsan for GEZGİN are already finished; what remains is completing the missile’s test and qualification campaign before manufacturing can begin in earnest. That sequencing — production readiness ahead of a completed qualification programme — is a status distinct from a serial-production contract or a first delivery, and neither has been announced.

Why Two Missile Programmes, Not One

Running a hypersonic ballistic missile and a long-range cruise missile toward service in parallel reflects a deliberate Turkish strategy of building strike options across missile classes rather than depending on a single system. A ballistic missile like TAYFUN Blok-4 offers speed and a difficult intercept profile against modern air defences, complementing ground-based interceptor programmes such as the Steel Dome layered air-defence network; a cruise missile like GEZGİN trades speed for a longer, lower, more flexible flight path and, typically, a lower unit cost — the same trade-off that has kept both missile types in parallel development among the handful of states that build long-range strike weapons domestically.

For Türkiye, fielding both indigenously — after decades of relying on the United States and European suppliers for comparable systems, and after periods of restricted access to some Western missile technology — removes a strategic dependency and, longer term, opens an export avenue that Roketsan has already built into a substantial share of its business through shorter-range systems like ATMACA and the İHA-family air-launched munitions it supplies to Baykar’s AKINCI drone.

No export customer, quantity, or unit cost has been disclosed for either TAYFUN Blok-4 or GEZGİN, and both remain, by İkinci’s own account, short of full qualification. Their progress is worth tracking precisely because Türkiye has a record of closing that gap faster than initial timelines suggested in comparable programmes, and slower in others — a mixed track record this article does not attempt to resolve in advance of the missiles’ own test results.
