Altınay Defense Opens UK Subsidiary in Push for ‘Global 100’
Altınay Defense Technologies, an Istanbul-area engineering house that supplies components into some of Türkiye’s biggest defence programmes without ever putting its own name on a finished weapon system, has opened a wholly owned subsidiary in the United Kingdom. The new entity, Altınay Aerospace Technologies International Ltd, was announced on September 22 as what the company calls an “export and cooperation bridge” into Western defence markets.
A Supplier Most Readers Have Never Heard Of
Altınay is not a household name outside the Turkish industry, and that is largely the point of its business model. Founded in 2014 and based in Istanbul, the company employs more than 300 engineers across upwards of 40,000 square metres of facilities, and builds motion-control systems, unmanned platforms, stealth-related technologies, weapon-handling systems, ammunition-destruction equipment and production tooling that feed into larger platforms rather than standing alone. By its own account, its components have gone into the KAAN fighter programme and Türkiye’s MİLGEM-family warships, among others. The company was included on Türkiye’s Ar-Ge 500 list of top R&D spenders earlier this month and has shown at SAHA Expo, Eurosatory and the EFES-2026 military exercise this year.
Why a UK Entity
According to Altınay’s own statement, the UK subsidiary is meant to give the company more direct access to Western technology ecosystems, easier integration with international prime contractors, and a platform to build strategic industrial partnerships — without shifting its engineering or production base out of Türkiye. CEO Burak Mercan framed the move as part of a “Global 100” ambition, a reference to industry rankings such as Defense News’ annual top-100 list, which already includes five Turkish firms this year. “We are moving forward with determined steps in line with our vision of becoming one of the world’s leading defence industry companies,” Mercan said in the announcement.
The company also named Stephen Darnell as Chief Growth and Strategy Officer of the Altınay Defense Group, with responsibility for international growth and strategic partnerships. Darnell said the goal was to turn the firm’s “superior capabilities” into “sustainable growth in the international arena.” Neither the company’s statement nor accompanying Turkish press coverage disclosed the size of the UK investment, planned headcount, or a specific timeline for the subsidiary to become operational.
Part of a Wider Pattern
Altınay’s move follows a path several Turkish defence suppliers have taken in the past two years: setting up subsidiaries or joint ventures inside NATO markets to shorten the distance between a Turkish engineering base and Western prime contractors who prefer, or in some cases require, a domestic or allied corporate presence before awarding subcontracts. Türkiye’s position outside the US ITAR regime is often cited by Turkish firms as a selling point in these deals, since it can spare customers the licensing friction that comes with US-origin components — an argument component suppliers like Altınay can make as readily as prime contractors such as Baykar or Turkish Aerospace.
What the UK entity will not do, at least on the evidence available so far, is announce contracts of its own. No customer, programme or order has been tied to Altınay Aerospace Technologies International Ltd since its creation was disclosed. Its near-term role looks administrative and relationship-building — a legal and commercial foothold from which Altınay can bid into British and European supply chains — rather than the vehicle for an immediate export deal. Whether that translates into subcontracts on UK or European platforms is the detail worth watching in the coming months, and one Altınay itself has yet to specify.
